Man, I love college!
That was our jam, you guys..and it may be yours too! I know a lot of you are about to start college, some going to big campuses and some going to smaller ones much like the one I went to. I attended all four years of college in Arkansas, and no it wasn’t University of Arkansas. It was University of the Ozarks, a place I hold very dear and near to my heart. Let me tell you it wasn’t always like that, my freshmen year was tough! I absolutely hated being in such a small town with very little to do, and don’t get me started with the weird smells. My sophomore year, my experience and outlook on small campus life completely changed. And so, to keep you from wasting a year wallowing in your sorrows, I asked my friends (hi Nircia and Grace! :)) to help me come up with a list of things we did to survive at University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas (pop 9,251) . Let’s get started!
**Note: this is from an International student’s perspective**
Get ya some Umami’s
BEST.SUSHI.EVER! I still can’t find a place that’s better than Umami’s. If you’re bored or want to get away, it’s a 20 min ride from campus. Just a taste of their yum yum sauce will send your blues away.
Become a Razorback Fan
This will be your college and professional team so get familiar. Just like that you have something to do on Saturdays. WPS!
Host Parents
Get involved in a church and you may get host parents. If you’re lucky like I was, they will invite you over for home cooked meals, let you do your laundry (forget hoarding quarters!), and love you as much as your parents. Such a blessing!
Monday’s and Friday’s at the President’s Office
Okay, so I think this one was stopped a couple of years ago so I apologize. But I still wanted to include it because it was one of my favorite things about U of O. Every Monday and Friday, there was an assortment of donuts and bagels at the President’s Office…free for everyone. That strawberry cream cheese spread was life!
Dodges
You’ll probably have a couple of all-nighters. Dodges will be your fuel, best pizza sticks!
Altus
Also about a 20 min ride from campus. You go there for one thing, and one thing only.
Get togethers
Oh, we had some good get togethers. Shoutout to Malisa, Chloe, and Katrina!
Taco Bell
I haven’t had Taco Bell since college, but for four years, I was VERY familiar with the fourth meal (heyy freshmen 15!). Favs: chicken chalupa, chicken quesadilla, 7 layer nacho.
Eagle’s Nest
Cafe food ain’t the best on weekends. Save up your meals for those days.
Cwoods
Every Thursday, you meet at the library. Tell ’em Michelle sent ya and sing Wagon Wheel at the top of your lungs for me…only if you’re 21 ;).
Waffle House
After Cwoods, you’ll need a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit.
That’s it guys! That’s how my friends and I survived college. Get creative, explore Arkansas, go on trips, get involved with Student Life and by your senior year, you won’t want to leave.
Thanks for stopping by! Hope you have a great week!
